Title: A Night In The Hills
Author: Paz Marquez-Benitez 
Author's Background: Paz Marquez Benitez (1894 - 1983) was a Filipina short-story writer. Born in 1894 in Lucena, Tayabas known as Quezon today. Marquez-Benitez authored the first FIlipino modern English language short story, Dead Stars, published in the Philippine Herald in 1925.

 kaingin – employing a technique of clearing land by slashing and burning underbush and trees and plowing the ashes under for fertilizer.

 misas de gallo – an event in the Philippines during Christmas season.

 Characters: 

 Gerardo Luna – he dreamt to going to a forest in his childhood.

 His wife – she advised that Gerardo should look at the buin siness side of his trip with Ambo.

 Ambo – an orchid gatherer who invited Gerardo to go to a forest.

 Sotera / Ate Tere – Gerardo’s older sibling.

 Peregrina – Gerardo’s fianceé.

 Settings: Intramuros, Manila, Philippines

 Exposition: Gerardo Luna is being introduced, mentioning his long-time dream of going to the forest.

 Rising Action: Gerardo told her wife about his dream of going in to the forest but her wife opposed and told Gerardo to forget about his long-time dream.

 Climax: Gerardo's wife passed away. Gerardo can now go into the forest with Ambo and experience being in a forest. 

 Falling Action: This is the part where Gerardo realizes that the forest is not exactly what he dreamed of.

 Ending:Gerardo went home. Feeling, sad and disappointed. 

 Symbolism: Gerardo's dream. Gerardo's dream about forest is calm and beautiful. Gerardo prepared for it but in the end it is the opposite. Like life, there are many surprises that you will not expect.

 Theme: "Things are not always as they appear to be."

 Lesson: Be ready in facing your dream. How you imagine things is not the same as the reality. Expect the unexpected.
